All inner growth happens through the process of dis-identification from material that we unconsciously hold onto.
The idea being that suffering is caused by feelings and thoughts that, unbeknownst to us, we are holding onto and mistaking for who we are.
The fundamental steps are always the same: Bringing hidden aspects into awareness and letting go of the identification to them.
While the process is the same, the methods vary greatly.
Psychotherapies include talking, singing, dancing, painting, writing, working in multiple chairs, regulating the nervous system by giving it resources, positioning, using figures in sand or other people for representation.
All to achieve the two step process of awareness and letting go.
In spiritual circles, growth in awareness is often described as becoming conscious of the shadow, and letting go, as surrender, clearing or purification.
Classical spiritual practices include becoming aware, and then questioning who is the one being aware.
This is again a method of dis-identification from an 'I' that is holding a feeling or idea, allowing it to be released from being held onto.
The process of remaining dis-identified permanently, allowing things to pass as quickly as they arise from unconsciousness, is considered a state of enlightenment.
As Heigl called it - Identity Indifference.
Having experimented with as many modalities as I've had the chance to get my hands onto, I now largely utilise a specific method that I have found to be the simplest and the most direct, with my own evolution and in helping others do the same.
